Frequently asked questions

Can Atlas Ride Co arrange a complete Dolomites MTB holiday?

Yes. Atlas Ride Co can create custom Canazei and Val di Fassa packages including accommodation, airport transfers, local guiding and mountain bike or e-MTB rental. Individual elements can also be arranged for groups that already have part of their trip organised.

Can I hire a mountain bike or e-MTB in Canazei?

Yes. Mountain bikes and e-MTBs are available from local rental providers in Canazei and Val di Fassa. Atlas Ride Co can include suitable bike rental within a custom holiday package, but early booking is recommended during the main summer season.

Can I ride somewhere different every day?

Yes. From Canazei you can explore several lift sectors, complete the Sellaronda, ride the local bike park and visit neighbouring valleys. A guided itinerary can provide a different style of riding each day without repeatedly using the same trails.

Can non-riders enjoy a holiday in Canazei?

Absolutely. Canazei and Val di Fassa offer hiking, scenic lift rides, climbing, via ferrata, road cycling, wellness facilities, restaurants and traditional mountain villages. The scenery and range of summer activities make the Dolomites an excellent destination for mixed groups.

Can solo riders book a Dolomites mountain bike holiday?

Atlas Ride Co currently offers custom packages in the Dolomites, so the best availability and value is usually found with a private group. Solo riders are still welcome to enquire, and we can advise whether a suitable package or shared arrangement is available.

Can the Sellaronda be ridden in both directions?

Yes. The Sellaronda can usually be completed clockwise or anticlockwise, with each direction using different lifts and trails. The best choice depends on current lift operations, trail conditions and the type of riding your group prefers.

Do I need a guide for the Sellaronda MTB Tour?

A guide is not always compulsory on the standard marked route, but local guiding is highly recommended. A guide manages lift timings, chooses the best trail variations, avoids navigation mistakes and adapts the day around the group’s ability and the weather.

Has Val di Fassa hosted the Enduro World Series?

Yes. Val di Fassa and Canazei have hosted multiple rounds of elite international enduro racing. The race stages have showcased the area’s steep natural trails, technical terrain and demanding combination of climbing and descending.

How difficult are the trails in the Dolomites?

The difficulty varies enormously. Some areas have smooth flow trails and accessible family routes, while others contain steep, exposed and highly technical natural terrain. Alpine trail grading can also feel harder than familiar UK trail-centre grades because the descents are longer and more remote.

How high do you ride in the Dolomites?

Many lifts and trails rise above 2,000 metres, with routes travelling through open Alpine terrain beneath some of the Dolomites’ highest peaks. The altitude creates incredible scenery but also means cooler temperatures and rapidly changing weather.

How long is the Sellaronda MTB Tour?

The exact distance varies according to the direction, trail choices and lift connections, but most versions cover approximately 55 to 60 kilometres. It is a full mountain day rather than a simple bike park lap, so riders should be comfortable spending several hours on the bike.

How many days should I spend mountain biking in Canazei?

Five to seven days is ideal. This provides enough time to explore the local Canazei and Val di Fassa trails, complete the Sellaronda, enjoy a guided technical day and leave some flexibility for weather or a rest day.

Is Canazei good for enduro mountain biking?

Yes. Canazei and Val di Fassa have a strong enduro pedigree, with technical natural trails, long descents and varied mountain terrain. Several rounds of the Enduro World Series and Enduro World Cup have taken place in the area, using some of its most challenging trails.

Is Canazei good for private mountain bike groups?

Yes. Canazei works particularly well for private groups because the accommodation, guiding, airport transfers, bike rental and daily riding programme can be built around the group’s ability and preferred style of riding.

Is Canazei suitable for advanced mountain bikers?

Absolutely. Advanced riders will find steep enduro trails, rocky natural descents, high-altitude terrain and challenging former race stages. Guided riding opens up the most technical and rewarding trails beyond the obvious bike park network.

Is Canazei suitable for intermediate mountain bikers?

Yes. Confident intermediate riders can enjoy the easier bike park trails, selected natural descents and the Sellaronda with appropriate route choices. Riders should already be comfortable on red-grade trails and prepared for longer Alpine descents.

Is mountain biking in the Dolomites suitable for beginners?

Yes, but beginners need to choose the correct area and trails. Several Dolomite bike parks offer easier flow trails, skills areas and family routes, while the technical enduro terrain around Canazei and Ciampac is better suited to experienced riders.

Is the Dolomites a good destination for e-MTB riding?

Yes. E-MTBs are extremely popular throughout the Dolomites because they make it easier to link valleys, climb mountain roads and explore beyond the lift network. Val di Fassa also offers routes that combine electric assistance with lift-accessed descending.

Is the Sellaronda MTB Tour difficult?

The Sellaronda is best suited to confident intermediate riders and above. Although the lift system removes much of the climbing, the route still includes long descents, technical sections, changing trail surfaces and short uphill links. Weather and altitude can also make the day more demanding.

What bike should I bring to Canazei?

A modern enduro bike with approximately 150 to 170mm of suspension is the best all-round choice. It should have strong brakes, modern geometry and tubeless tyres with robust enduro or downhill casings to cope with rocky Alpine terrain.

What is the Canazei Bike Park like?

The Canazei and Val di Fassa bike park network offers lift-assisted trails around areas such as Belvedere, Col Rodella and nearby sectors. The riding includes flow trails, technical descents and natural Alpine terrain, with spectacular views across the Sella and Marmolada groups.

What is the food like in Val di Fassa?

The local food reflects a mixture of Italian, Tyrolean and Ladin traditions. Expect fresh pasta, polenta, dumplings, mountain cheeses, cured meats, hearty Alpine dishes, excellent coffee and regional wines.

What is the riding like at Ciampac?

Ciampac contains some of the most demanding riding around Canazei. Expect steep gradients, technical natural terrain, roots, rocks and trails originally selected for elite enduro racing. Some routes and sectors require access with an authorised local guide, so they should not be treated like ordinary marked bike park trails.

What is the Sellaronda MTB Tour?

The Sellaronda MTB Tour is a circular mountain bike route around the Sella Massif, passing through several Dolomite valleys and mountain passes. Riders use a combination of lifts, linking trails and short pedal sections to complete one of the most scenic mountain bike days in Europe.

What is the weather like in the Dolomites during summer?

Summer often brings warm, sunny conditions in the valleys, but temperatures are cooler at altitude and thunderstorms can develop quickly. Riders should carry a waterproof layer, warm clothing and enough water even when the forecast appears settled.

What makes the Dolomites different from Finale Ligure?

Finale Ligure offers lower-altitude Mediterranean enduro riding and a longer season, while the Dolomites deliver high-mountain scenery, lift-linked tours and dramatic Alpine terrain. The Dolomites are best during summer, whereas Finale can often be ridden through much more of the year.

What makes the Dolomites different from the Aosta Valley?

The Dolomites are known for their distinctive pale limestone towers, linked lift tours and a mixture of Italian and Ladin culture. The Aosta Valley feels more traditionally high Alpine, with huge glaciated peaks and a stronger focus on technical backcountry descents and gravity riding.

What type of mountain biking is available in the Dolomites?

The Dolomites offer a broad mix of riding, including lift-served bike park trails, natural enduro descents, high-altitude singletrack, flow trails, e-MTB routes and longer mountain tours linking several valleys. The exact style of riding varies considerably between areas.

What type of riding is Canazei best known for?

Canazei is best known for lift-assisted enduro riding, natural Alpine trails and the Sellaronda MTB Tour. The surrounding terrain ranges from accessible flow trails to steep, technical descents that have been used for international enduro racing.

When is the best time to mountain bike in the Dolomites?

The main lift-assisted season generally runs from June into September. July and August normally provide the widest lift access, while late June and early September can offer quieter trails. High-altitude routes may open later depending on remaining snow and trail conditions.

Where does Atlas Ride Co operate in the Dolomites?

Atlas Ride Co focuses on Canazei and Val di Fassa, one of the strongest bases for mountain biking in the central Dolomites. From Canazei, riders can access the local bike park, the Belvedere and Col Rodella sectors, the Sellaronda MTB Tour and more technical guided riding around Ciampac.

Where is Canazei?

Canazei is an Alpine village in Val di Fassa in the Trentino region of northern Italy. It sits beneath the Sella and Marmolada mountain groups and provides excellent access to the lift network and trails surrounding the central Dolomites.

Which airports are best for Canazei?

Innsbruck and Venice are normally the most practical airports for Canazei. Transfer times depend on traffic, weather and the chosen route, but both provide reasonable access to Val di Fassa compared with many other international airports.
