You don't appreciate a great guide until you meet one. There are alot of cowboys and cowgirls out there that claim to have what it takes but very few cut the mustard. Being a guide is much more than just knowing where the trail is and being able to ride it quicker than most punters, this is the amateur way, they'll show up without spares, a bike in bits, a mobile phone with 30% battery and pedal off at the speed they want to ride, waiting for you at the bottom.

We've worked with many guides and coaches over the years and will only ever trust our clients to those that we know will carry the values of Atlas Ride Co. with them, by doing the right thing for the client every turn of the pedal.

The Aosta Valley

We put our faith in Daniele Galimba and the team in Aosta. He's been a part of the Atlas Ride Co family for a few years now after first working with us in Finale Ligure. He's Aostan, born and bred; after years as a coach, guide and chasing the World Cup racing dream, he opened up his own guiding company.

For pricing and a package that we can put together for you including Accommodation & Bike Hire contact us on the form at the bottom of the page.

Finale Ligure

We've been working with the crew at Ride On Noli for years now, since 2016 and our first Finale Ligure Riders Weeks. We've since expanded our offering and partnership with the team, using their expertise and knowledge of Finale and Pietra Ligure's back country to offer Exclusive Tours into the hills of Mallare, Pietra, Bardinetto and beyond.

We love these guys and our relationship continues to go from strength to strength. Of course in Finale Ligure you can also call on us as guides and shuttle services, and if we have the space we'd be happy to take you on classic tours of Finale and pedal tours beyond into the lesser accessed trails that take some effort, we share the love, drop us a line or email and we'll find the best option for you.

SEE MORE FROM RIDE ON NOLI

Frequently asked questions

Are e-bikes allowed on guided rides?

Yes, e-bikes are increasingly common on guided days in the Portes du Soleil and guides are used to riding with mixed groups of e-bikes and regular bikes. It does change the pacing and sometimes the route, since e-bikes open up longer natural traverses that would otherwise mean a lot of pushing, so mention if anyone in your group is riding electric when you book so the day can be planned with that in mind.

Are your guides legally qualified to lead mountain bike rides in France?

Yes. Guiding or coaching mountain biking for payment in France is regulated, and anyone doing it professionally has to hold a recognised qualification such as a BPJEPS or DEJEPS VTT diploma, or the relevant accompagnateur qualification for the terrain involved. It's not just a badge of honour, it's a legal requirement, which is exactly why we work through established local guiding operations in Morzine rather than casual freelancers. If you're booking mountain guiding anywhere in France, it's worth asking the same question of whoever you're going with.

Can beginners book a guide, or is this only for experienced mountain bikers?

Guiding is genuinely useful at every level, and honestly it's often beginners and improvers who get the most out of it, since a guide will keep you off anything too steep or exposed and build your confidence on appropriate terrain rather than leaving you to guess from a trail map. If you've never ridden a bike park before, a guided introduction covering how the lifts work, how trail grading works locally, and a gentle blue-graded loop is a sensible way to spend your first couple of hours rather than working it out solo.

Can I book a private guide just for my group?

Yes, private guiding is available and it's actually how most of our guests book, since the pricing already scales for private groups of up to eight rather than mixing you in with strangers. A private day means the whole route, pace and terrain choice is built around your group specifically, which matters if you've got a real spread of ability or just want to ride at your own speed without waiting on other parties. It costs a bit more per person for a smaller group than a larger one, but you get full control over where you go and how hard you push it.

Can I book multiple days of guiding or coaching across my trip?

Yes, plenty of guests book guiding or coaching across several days rather than just once, which also tends to work out better value given the banded pricing per session. It's a good way to structure a week, guided exploration early on to learn the terrain and trail grading, then either more guiding further afield or a coaching day to work on whatever's been giving you trouble, before finishing with a few days riding it all back on your own.

Do I need a guide to ride in the Portes du Soleil, or can I just follow a map?

You don't need a guide to use the lifts and ride marked trails, and with over 600km of trail and around 65 official downhill routes across the network it's entirely rideable off your own back if you're confident reading trail markers. Where a guide earns their money is on the natural, unmarked trails that don't appear on any bike park map, the ones locals have been riding for years, and in stringing together a route across resorts like Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz without wasting half the day on lifts going the wrong way. A lot of our guests who've ridden the bike park before come back specifically for a guided day to finally get off the groomed stuff and onto proper Alpine singletrack.

Do I need my own bike, or can guiding be combined with bike hire?

You can bring your own bike or hire one through us as part of your Atlas Ride Co package, and guiding sits comfortably alongside either option. If you're hiring, it's worth booking the bike a day ahead of your guided session so there's time to get the fit and setup right before you're out on the hill, rather than sorting it on the morning you're due to meet your guide.

Does guiding cover natural trails, or is it all inside the bike park?

Both. A lot of guided days deliberately head away from the lift-served bike park and onto natural, non-lift trails through the forest and alpine pasture that you'd struggle to find on your own, which is where local knowledge really pays off. Equally, if you want a bike park focused day working laps on Morzine's black and red runs like Mainline or Super 8, that's just as easy to arrange. Most guests end up doing a bit of both across a trip, bike park in the morning for warm laps, natural trails in the afternoon for something wilder.

Does one guiding booking cover riding across the whole Portes du Soleil, or just Morzine itself?

A single booking can cover riding well beyond Morzine, since the whole point of the Portes du Soleil lift pass is that it links 12 resorts across the French-Swiss border, and guides regularly build routes that take in Les Gets, Avoriaz, Châtel and beyond rather than staying put in one valley. Whether you actually range that far depends on the day booked, a two-hour session naturally stays more local, while a full day gives enough time to genuinely explore across resorts.

How big are the groups on a guided day?

Guided sessions run from one rider up to eight, and the price is banded by numbers rather than charged strictly per head, so a group of six splits the cost more efficiently than four separate solo bookings. Coaching sessions tend to work best kept smaller, usually four or fewer, simply because that's how many riders a coach can realistically watch and give useful feedback to in a couple of hours. If you've got a bigger group with a real mix of ability, it's often better to split into two smaller guided groups than squeeze everyone onto one ride.

How do you match riders to the right guide or route?

We ask a few honest questions before you arrive: what you normally ride at home, how comfortable you are on steeper natural trails versus groomed bike park runs, and whether you've ridden lift-served terrain before. Season Guiding then builds the day around that rather than a fixed itinerary, so a group of confident enduro riders might be pointed at the natural trails above Avoriaz while a family with mixed experience sticks to blue and easier red terrain with more relaxed pacing. If ability turns out to be more mixed than expected once you're out on the hill, guides will happily adjust the route on the fly rather than push anyone into something they're not ready for.

How far in advance should I book guiding or coaching?

Book as early as you can once your dates are confirmed, particularly in peak summer weeks in July and August when Season Guiding's availability gets snapped up alongside bike hire and accommodation. If you're planning a whole trip through us, it's easiest to sort guiding at the same time as your chalet and bike hire booking so everything lines up, rather than trying to add it on once you're already out there.

Is coaching priced differently to guiding?

Coaching sits within the same duration and group-size pricing structure as guiding, whether you're booking two hours, a half day or a full day. What changes is how the time is used, less ground covered, more repetition on specific sections, so a two-hour coaching slot might stay entirely within the bike park working on jumps and berms rather than covering distance across the valley. If you want a mix of both in one booking, say so when you enquire and Season Guiding can structure the session that way.

Is guiding suitable for families with kids?

Yes, families are well catered for, and because guided groups can be built around your specific mix of riders, a guide can plan a route that suits a ten-year-old on a hardtail as easily as a route for a group of adults on enduro bikes. It's worth flagging ages and experience levels when you enquire so Season Guiding can pick appropriate terrain and pace rather than defaulting to a standard adult itinerary.

What does a typical guided day actually cost in Morzine?

Pricing is banded by both duration and group size. A two-hour session starts at €120 for one to four riders, rising to €160 for a group of eight. A half day runs from €195 up to €255, and a full day from €330 up to €410, again depending on how many of you there are. There's also an evening option, the Bourgeoise Early Evening Descent, priced at €50 per person, which is a nice way to fit in a ride after a day on the bike park lifts or on a travel day when you arrive early.

What happens if the weather turns on a guided day?

Guides make the call on the day based on conditions, and in the Alps that can mean adjusting the route rather than cancelling outright, dropping down to lower, more sheltered trails if it's wet or thundery up high, since a lot of the natural singletrack gets genuinely slick and sketchy in the rain. If lifts are closed for high wind, which does happen on the exposed sections above Avoriaz and Châtel, the day gets rebuilt around what's rideable from town instead. We'd always rather move things around than send you out in conditions that aren't fun or safe, so get in touch as early as possible if the forecast looks rough for your dates so we can plan around it.

What language do the guides speak?

Season Guiding's team work with English-speaking guests regularly, alongside French and other Alpine visitors, so language hasn't been an issue for our guests booking through us. If you've got a specific requirement, mention it when you enquire and we'll check availability accordingly.

What should I bring on a guided or coaching day?

Full-face or open-face helmet and appropriate protection depending on the terrain, a hydration pack or bottle, and clothing you can layer, since it's noticeably cooler up at altitude on the gondolas even on a warm day in the valley. If you're hiring kit through us we can advise on protection appropriate to the day you've booked, and your guide will run through anything specific to the terrain at the start of the session.

What's the difference between a mountain bike guide and a mountain bike coach in Morzine?

A guide's job is to get you round the mountain safely and efficiently, showing you the best lines through the Portes du Soleil, linking up lift access with natural singletrack, and making sure nobody ends up on a trail that's above their level. A coach is there to improve how you ride, working on specific skills like cornering, jumping or braking, usually on a smaller patch of terrain such as the bike park berms so you can repeat a section until it clicks. Plenty of our guests do both in the same trip: a guided day or two to see the terrain, then a coaching session to sharpen up technique before heading back out. If you're not sure which you need, tell us what you're hoping to get out of the days and we'll point you the right way.

Who actually runs the guiding and coaching in Morzine?

We work with Season Guiding, a Morzine-based outfit we've used for years, so you're not getting someone we found the week before your trip. They know the Portes du Soleil inside out, from the local Morzine trails right through to the bigger cross-border loops, and they're the same team whether you're booking a two-hour taster or a full week of guided riding.
