SAMPLE ITINERARY

Advised bike - 140mm - 170mm Enduro bike

Day 0: Arrival Day (10km, 300-500m ascent)

Day 0 allows for plenty of time to arrive at the guest house. If you make it before 4 pm our guides will take you on a pre-trip ride. This gives you a chance to finalise any bike setup and have a tinker. This will be a 10k loop local to the guest house taking in some of the local forest trails. Dinner will be booked for 7:30 pm and the trip brief commences! If you don't make the pre-ride we will see you at the guest house from 6:30 pm onwards.

Day 1: Ben Alder, out and back (Ben Alder, 60km, 1200m ascent)

Starting from Scotland's highest distillery at Dalwhinnie we'll warm up on a loch-side track that leads to a stalker's bothy. From here we begin our ride on 40km of rolling singletrack. The trails here are maintained by the estate. Their sweeping, smooth curves make these trails unique in the highlands. The high point is the Bealeach Dubh (the black pass) where there is a view of Ben Nevis and the west coast. Then we pick up the pace on these flowing trails down to lunch at a lochside beach. An easy climb after lunch leads to another 10km of silky descent, and a wee dram at the distillery.

Day 2: Sgor Gaoith High Mountain Descents (40km, 1300m ascent)

Day 2's riding takes on descents from Sgor Goaith, a Scottish Munro that towers over the picturesque Glen Feshie. These are classic high mountain trails falling over 700m on a continuous single track from the plateau, with views over the Cairngorms, to the forest below. We'll make full use of our bike's climbing capability to complete this loop trying to save some energy for the roaring descents on water bars, boulders and switch-backs.

Day 3: Eastern Cairngorms, Beinn A'Bhuird  (38km, 1300m ascent)

This route starts on a rolling single track through the ancient Caledonian forest of the Eastern Cairngorms. Technical, precise climbing, with just the right balance of torque and traction, on the stalkers' paths, brings us to the base of Beinn A'Bhuird, the table hill. The trail contours onto the summit where there are mind-blowing views over the corries and lochs back towards our start point far below. After taking in the view and exploring the rocky tors on the summit, we'll set up for the longest descent of the week; eventually reaching a bothy and swimming spot at the head of the River Dee for a rest and cool down..

Day 4: Royal Deeside, Heart Break Ridge and Beyond (40km, 1200m ascent)

Ballater, a hotspot for Aberdeenshire's mountain biking, is our base for this day.  From the picturesque town square, we'll warm up and try some granite slab test pieces overlooking the river and the lochs. We climb onto the grouse moors and the start of trails on long granite ridge lines. The views live up to Aberdeenshire's strapline - from the mountains to the sea. Then it's full throttle, enduro descent, and back to the village for lunch. We'll make a southern loop in the afternoon, this time with views across Lochangar, the Queen's Mountain, and Balmoral Castle. This sets us up for a run on the legendary local trail Heart Break Ridge.

We aim to leave Ballater at 3 PM to return to Aviemore for a 5 pm departure.

We don't experience many Midge's problems in the Cairngorms due to it being drier and the riding higher than the West Coast.

Included in the price is all your travel whilst on the trip with us in Scotland and including collection and drop off from Aviemore train station. TRAIL ETIQUETTE

We need to do our bit! 7 mountain bikers will be pretty conspicuous and we’ll have some impact on the landscape and other trail users. As a company, we’re 100% committed to minimising our impact in every way we can. We operate a strict ‘pack it out’ policy for all litter (including banana skins and orange peel), and we try to leave as little trace of our passing as possible.

While we’ll enjoy some epic descents and trails, please ride in control and at a speed that reflects your line of sight and abilities. We’ll certainly meet walkers and we want any interactions to be as positive as possible. It’s important to give mountain bikers a good name.

Holiday Insurance

It is essential and a required part of your booking process that you have holiday insurance in place for your trip that covers against medical and personal accidents and all the activities including mountain biking you will take part in.

We have worked with Yellow Jersey Cycle insurance for the past 3 years now and feel they offer the perfect Travel and Bike insurance package. All Atlas Ride Co clients also receive a 10% discount on their Mountain Bike and Travel policies. Your discount code will be in your booking confirmation.

What an amazing few days riding!!!
This had everything from big mountain ascents, descents, and ridgelines to local hidden trails.
Secret bothys and river crossings all added to the experience.
The accommodation was fantastic and had everything you needed from bike storage, charging and cleaning facilities!! The rooms and particularly the breakfasts were amazing and left you fuelled up for the big rides ahead.
The guides were very knowledgeable, funny and helpful with particular sections of trails.
My eyes and neck also got a very good workout as the scenery is just unreal.
Highly recommended and would certainly be doing this again.

Mark S.

Brilliant holiday in the Cairngorms well planned, quality rides, guides and accommodation. If you've not done the Cairngorms with these guys your missing out. Premier League standard!!!

Frequently asked questions

Are midges a big problem on this trip?

Less than you might expect, actually - because so much of the riding is at higher elevation on drier ground, you get far fewer midges than you would down in the glens or near standing water. It's still Scotland, so we wouldn't say never, but it's genuinely less of an issue on this route than on a lot of lower-altitude Highland trips.

Are the trails purpose-built, like a bike park?

No, and that's rather the point - there are no jumps, no bike park features, no artificial berms. Everything you ride is natural mountain terrain, shaped by the landscape rather than a trail builder, which is exactly what draws a lot of our guests to this trip over a more conventional bike park holiday.

Can beginners join this specific tour?

Honestly, no - this is one of our more demanding trips, rated 3 out of 5 for both fitness and technical ability and aimed at high intermediate to advanced riders comfortable with rocky, natural descents and long mountain days. If you're newer to the sport, we'd point you towards a gentler trip first and suggest coming back to the Big Mountain Tour once you've built up more technical mileage.

Do I need my own travel and bike insurance?

Yes, proper travel and mountain bike insurance is mandatory for this trip, not just a nice-to-have given the remote, technical terrain we're covering each day. We work with Yellow Jersey Cycle Insurance and can get you a 10% discount if you don't already have suitable cover sorted.

Do I need to be able to walk in my cycling shoes?

Yes - with terrain this technical and remote, there are sections on most days where walking a short stretch is simply the sensible option, whether that's a particularly gnarly rock garden or just catching your breath on a steep push. It's worth trying your shoes out on some rough ground before you travel if you're not used to hike-a-bike sections.

How do I get to the start of the tour?

Most guests arrive into Aviemore by train - it's about £17.50 and 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes from Edinburgh, or around £23.10 and roughly the same journey time from Glasgow. The Caledonian Sleeper is a brilliant option too if you're coming from further south, leaving London at 21:15 and rolling into Aviemore at 07:40, so you can wake up ready to ride rather than losing a day to travel.

How many riders are in a group, and how many guides do we get?

We cap groups at a maximum of seven riders per guide, so you're never lost in a big pack and our Level 3 qualified guides can properly look after everyone on technical ground. It also means the pace can flex around the group rather than everyone having to keep up with the fastest rider.

How much does the tour cost, and what are the payment terms?

Prices start from £899 per person. We ask for a 30% deposit to secure your place, which is non-refundable, with the remaining balance due 8 weeks before you arrive. If you're travelling solo and need your own room, there's a single supplement of £200-£300 depending on availability.

Is there a "leave no trace" policy on this tour?

Yes - we run a strict pack-it-out approach to litter and try to minimise our impact on these trails as much as possible, since a lot of what makes the Cairngorms special is exactly the untouched, natural character of the landscape. Our guides will talk you through trail etiquette at the start of the trip so everyone's on the same page.

Is there a resource to help me check if this tour is right for my ability?

Yes, we've got an ability assessor tool that's worth working through honestly before you book, since this is a demanding trip and we'd rather steer you towards the right Atlas Ride Co holiday than have you struggle through terrain that isn't suited to your current level. If you're on the fence, get in touch with our team directly and we can talk through your riding experience.

Is there a ride on the day I arrive?

Yes - day zero is an optional local loop of around 10km with 300-500m of ascent through the forest trails near Aviemore. It's a gentle way to shake off the travel, meet your guides and the rest of the group, and get a feel for the bikes before the bigger days start.

Is this trip a race, or can I go at my own pace within the group?

It's explicitly not a race - our guides are there to make sure everyone gets round safely and nobody gets left behind, not to push the group into a time trial. That said, because we do grade this tour for high intermediate/advanced riders, everyone in the group should be capable of the terrain and daily distances, even if pace naturally varies rider to rider.

What does a typical day on the tour look like?

Day one takes you out from Dalwhinnie, home to Scotland's highest distillery, on a 60km route with around 1200m of climbing and sweeping views towards Ben Nevis and the west coast. Day two heads up to Sgor Gaoith for roughly 40km and 1300m of ascent, rewarded with a continuous 700m descent off the high plateau through water bars and boulder fields. Day three pushes into the Eastern Cairngorms through ancient Caledonian pine forest towards Beinn A'Bhuird, with the longest descent of the week, and day four finishes from Ballater on Royal Deeside, taking in the Heart Break Ridge trail with views towards Balmoral.

What exactly is the Cairngorms Big Mountain MTB Tour?

It's our four-day guided mountain bike adventure through Scotland's Cairngorms National Park, based out of Aviemore with an optional welcome ride the evening you arrive. Rather than lift-served bike park riding, this is proper high-altitude single-track across granite mountain terrain - the kind of trip we genuinely consider a bucket-list Scottish MTB holiday rather than just another long weekend away.

What fitness and technical ability do I need for this tour?

We rate both the fitness and technical demands at 3 out of 5, which in practice means this suits high intermediate to advanced riders who are genuinely comfortable on technical single-track, rocky descents and sustained climbing. If you're newer to the sport or unsure where you sit, it's worth using our ability assessor before booking so we can make sure this is the right trip rather than something that'll leave you struggling on day one.

What happens if the weather turns bad partway through the tour?

Our guides give a weather briefing every evening covering what's forecast and how it might affect the next day's route, and they'll adjust the plan on the ground if conditions on the tops aren't safe or sensible to ride. Scottish mountain weather changes fast, so a flexible, guide-led approach matters more here than sticking rigidly to a printed itinerary.

What kind of bike should I bring?

We recommend something in the 140mm to 170mm travel enduro range - capable enough for the rocky, natural descents but still pedals well enough for the climbing days demand. Given the terrain, spare tubes and a tubeless repair kit aren't optional extras here, they're essential, since punctures on granite and boulder fields are a genuine possibility most days.

What time of year does the tour run?

We operate the Big Mountain Tour from early May through to late September, which is when the high plateau terrain is genuinely rideable and the days are long enough to make the most of it. Scottish mountain weather can still throw four seasons at you in one day even in summer, so we give a proper weather briefing every evening and will adjust the following day's plan if conditions demand it.

What's included in the tour price?

Your booking covers four days of guided riding plus the optional welcome ride, four nights in 4-star Scottish guest houses in twin or double rooms, cooked breakfasts and lunch provisions each day, transport around Scotland during the trip including collection and drop-off at Aviemore station, secure bike storage and a proper wash and maintenance area with tools, and passenger protection insurance.

What's the accommodation actually like?

You're staying in 4-star Scottish guest houses for all four nights, in twin or double rooms, with a proper cooked breakfast each morning using local ingredients. After a big day in the saddle, you'll also have secure bike storage and a wash and maintenance area with tools on hand, so you're not trying to hose down a mud-caked bike in a car park.

Which specific areas of the Cairngorms does the tour cover?

Across the four days you're riding through Glen Feshie, out from Dalwhinnie towards Ben Alder, up onto the Sgor Gaoith plateau, into the ancient Caledonian forest around Beinn A'Bhuird, and finishing on Royal Deeside near Ballater. It's a genuinely varied route through some of the wildest and most scenic corners of the National Park, all above 1000m at points.

Will you pick me up from the station?

Yes, collection and drop-off at Aviemore station is included as part of the tour, so once you're off the train you don't need to worry about arranging your own transfer to where the group's based.
