Absolutely brilliant experience. The accommodation (Ravenscraig guest house) and food was spot on for both quality and the location. Bike security and facilities for wash and repair was excellent. Our guide, Mike Wilkes couldn’t have done a better job of informing and including all the riders in our group. The routes ticked all the boxes and the trails and views will be memories to last a lifetime. Bought the ticket, had a great ride😁👍

Introduction

Our Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains Classic MTB Weekend is an awesome riding experience through one of the UK’s finest National Parks in South Wales.

What to expect?

The Brecon Beacons are the highest mountains in Southern Britain and are within easy reach of the M4 motorway, making them incredibly accessible for mountain bikers based in the south. Accessible, yes; but definitely not to be underestimated – these are real mountains and the riding in the area is pretty full-on, with big climbs, awesome views and amazing descents. This trip is based in a lodge in the Usk Valley, giving us a chance to enjoy the area’s 2 big mountain classics.

Getting ready for 2 days of mountain biking in fairly full-on, remote locations can be a major task. With up to 10 riders (plus 2 guides!). These notes will help everybody know what to expect from the trip and what to bring. If there’s anything else you need to know, or want to check, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Sample Itinerary

This is only a sample itinerary and can change at any given date, we are always working to improve the trips and alterations are common to improve and adapt.

Friday night, arrive at the lodge in your own time and grab a beer and a few minutes to wind down and meet your fellow riders in the lounge before heading over the road (10 metres in fact)  to the New Inn, an award-winning pub for dinner, table booked for 8 pm to allow folk plenty of time to arrive. Their menu is seasonal and will be sent out to you the week before to make your choices! It is superb!

Day 1 – The Black Mountains Beast loop (or similar)

Distance around - 35km

Ascent around - 1000m

Enjoy a cooked breakfast as well as a few coffees, and we’ll then have a bit of time before we jump on the bikes and ride straight out of the accommodation door! Weather permitting, we’ll ride a variation of the classic Big Black Mountains tour.

This is definitely one of the best mtb rides anywhere in the UK, and one should be on every mountain biker's bucket list. We’ll finish in the small town of Crickhowell or back at the accommodation. Back at the lodge, there will be coffee, wine, beer and cake as well as a hot shower awaiting us. Saturday night will be more socialising, and more award-winning food – plenty of opportunities to put back the calories you burned during the day.

Day 2 – Brecon Beacons Gap Ride

Distance around - 35km

Ascent around - 900m

After another cooked breakfast, more calories and more coffee, we will leave the lodge for the final time and drive down to the tiny village of Talybont-on-Usk, where we’ll start a variation of the famous Brecon Beacons Gap Ride. The exact route will depend on the weather and the group, but whatever we decide to do, we’ll eventually climb to a 600m col in the highest mountains in the national park, and then enjoy an almost endless descent to finish. Back at Talybont, we’ll use the village bike wash – yes, the village really does have dedicated bike wash facilities and showers before we grab a celebratory beer/coffee and start our journey home!

What’s included?

  • Accommodation – 2 nights accommodation in a traditional Welsh lodge (Based on twin rooms)
  • Meals – Home-cooked breakfasts, packed lunches and post-ride cake and coffee, beer, wine and soft drinks
  • All guiding – 2 full day’s guided riding with 2 BC Level 3 Guides – maximum client-to-guide ratio 8-1
  • Safety Equipment – First aid kits and emergency shelters carried by our guides alongside your personal equipment packs
  • Passenger Protection Insurance

*Evening meals not included, eaten at an award-winning pub across the road, the New Inn, Bwlch

*Single supplement available at £100

Riding skills and fitness

Riding skills

In terms of riding ability, this trip won’t suit anyone who isn’t happy riding red/black grade trails in typical UK trail centres. Although you will encounter more natural terrain in the Brecon Beacons. These are not bike park trails, no drops, gaps or berms here!

We’ve chosen routes that give a real flavour of the best trails in the Brecon Beacon. Some are technical with loose rock and some with slippery mud and grass but still make for an enjoyable weekend if you are of an intermediate-level rider.

There will be some long days (possibly 6-8 hours or more) and some technical downs (some of which probably everybody will walk a few metres). As long as you can keep smiling when you’re tired and pushing your bike then you’ll be fine.

Fitness

It’s much more about stamina than speed and you'll need to be strong. On the bigger days, we’ll ride at a relaxed pace that can be kept up all day.

The best training for this kind of trip is actually just getting out riding – preferably longer distances at a steady pace. 30km at a steady pace will be more useful than 15km at racing speed, so if your local trails are short, slow it down and do 2 laps!

Weather

On this Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains mountain bike tour we could experience everything from hot sunny days, wet and windy days to full on blizzards. We’ve made many trips to South Wales throughout the year and had a real mix. When packing, please bring winter and summer clothing so we can make more informed decisions about what to wear and carry on the day or the night before.

Insurance

We don’t need medical insurance in the UK, but I strongly recommend travel insurance just to cover you should you get injured or fall ill before the trip or during it. Try YellowJersey and use the discount code – MTB75

Our impact

Up to 10 mountain bikers will be pretty conspicuous and we’ll have some impact on the landscape and other trail users. As a company, we’re 100% committed to minimising our impact in every way we can.

We operate a strict ‘pack it out’ policy for all litter (including banana skins and orange peel), and we try to leave as little trace of our passing as possible. While we’ll enjoy some epic descents and trails, please ride in control and at a speed that reflects your line of sight and abilities.

We’ll certainly meet walkers and we want any interactions to be as positive as possible. It’s important to give mountain bikers a good name.

Kit list

Kit list

The weather can be very varied in the South Wales so we need to be prepared. We’ll have a briefing every evening to give you an up to date weather forecast and plan the next day. We can share some of the kit to keep packs as light as possible.

Riding kit

Please let us know if there’s anything you haven’t got that you may need.

Essential, please make sure you have the following

  • Hydration pack big enough to carry everything in the list below – suggested size 15L to 20L
  • Mini pump for your valve type
  • Inner tube (even if you use tubeless)
  • Tubeless repair kit (if you use tubeless)
  • Puncture patches (if you don’t use tubeless)
  • Tyre levers
  • Multi-tool
  • 1 set of spare brake pads
  • Rear gear hanger for your bike
  • Power link for your chain type and speed
  • Any medication you need

Recommended

  • Dry bag to keep everything dry inside your pack
  • Cable ties
  • Duct tape (we suggest wrapping 1m around your pump)
  • Mobile phone – in a waterproof case or plastic bag
  • Small personal first aid kit
  • You’ll also need the following
  • Water and snacks – gels, energy bars, jelly babies etc
  • Lunch (this will be provided but you’ll need to carry it)
  • Recommended clothing

Essential, please make sure you have the following

  • Helmet
  • Waterproof jacket (a full-on waterproof is recommended)
  • Insulated jacket or very warm emergency layer
  • MTB shoes (you must be able to walk in them!)

Recommended

  • Knee and elbow pads
  • Cycling shorts and/or waterproof shorts (or trousers)
  • Wicking base layer or cycling jersey
  • Mid layer (fleece or soft shell)
  • Woolly hat or buff
  • Riding glasses
  • Gloves (worth having a spare pair if it’s wet)
  • Waterproof socks

Bikes

Your bike needs to be ready for the rigours of the mountains – steep and rocky climbs and very rough descents. A lightweight x-country bike probably won’t be strong enough for the descents and a downhill rig will be too heavy for the climbs. Just about everything in between will do the job.

Tyres are important too. Lightweight racing tyres are easily torn. We recommend good trail or all-mountain tyres such as Maxxis High Rollers/Minion DHR/DHF in a Double Down casing and possibly with inserts.

Please make sure your bike is ready for 4 days of hard riding. Anything that looks slightly suspect will almost certainly break.

There are good bike shops Wales along the route but nothing very convenient.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need travel insurance for this trip?

You don't need separate UK medical insurance since you're riding at home, but we'd still strongly recommend proper travel and mountain bike cover given the remote terrain and technical descents involved. We work with Yellow Jersey Cycle Insurance and guests can get a discount using the code MTB75 if you need cover sorted before you arrive.

How do I get to the Brecon Beacons for the weekend?

The lodge sits in the Usk Valley, easily reached off the M4 motorway if you're driving from the south, and Abergavenny is your nearest mainline train station if you're coming without a car. From Abergavenny it's a short taxi or transfer on into the Usk Valley, so it's a genuinely easy weekend to get to without needing to fly anywhere.

How many riders and guides are on the trip?

We cap the group at a maximum of 10 riders, with two BC Level 3 qualified guides looking after you, so the client-to-guide ratio never goes above 8:1. It means you're properly looked after on technical, remote terrain rather than being one of a big anonymous group.

How much does the weekend cost?

Prices start from £395 per person for the full weekend, covering two nights' lodging, both full days of guiding, safety equipment and Passenger Protection Insurance, on top of the meals listed above. Private group bookings can also be arranged if you want the weekend to yourselves.

Is an e-MTB version of this weekend available?

Yes, e-MTB tour dates are also offered alongside the standard weekend, which is worth asking about if you'd like the same big mountain routes with some assistance on the climbs. Get in touch with our team and we can talk you through availability and whether it suits the terrain you're after.

Is there a trail etiquette or environmental policy on the weekend?

Yes, we run a strict pack-it-out approach, right down to banana skins and orange peel, since so much of what makes this landscape special is exactly how untouched it feels. We also ask guests to ride in control and respect sight lines, and to be friendly with walkers and other trail users you'll inevitably cross paths with on shared ground in the national park.

Is this more about fitness or technical skill?

Both matter, but stamina counts for more than outright speed here. You're looking at long days, potentially 6-8 hours or more depending on pace and weather, with sustained climbing, so steady, all-day fitness at a manageable pace will get you round more comfortably than being quick over a short technical section and then blowing up on the next climb.

What ability level do I need for this trip?

You'll want to be comfortable on red and black grade trail centre trails as a baseline, since a lot of this weekend is loose rock, mud and grass rather than smooth, graded singletrack. It's genuinely not suitable for complete beginners - we'd rather be upfront about that than have you struggling on a remote mountainside on day one.

What does a typical weekend itinerary look like?

You arrive Friday evening, settle into the lodge and head down to the New Inn for dinner together at 8pm, which is a nice way to meet the group before the riding starts. Saturday is the Black Mountains Beast Loop, roughly 35km with around 1000m of ascent, finishing either back at the lodge or down in Crickhowell depending on the route that day. Sunday is the Brecon Beacons Gap Ride, another 35km and about 900m of climbing, starting from Talybont-on-Usk and topping out at a 600m col before what we can only describe as an almost endless descent back down.

What is the Brecon Beacons MTB Weekend actually like?

It's a two-night guided mountain biking break based in the Usk Valley, taking in two of the best big days of riding South Wales has to offer - the Black Mountains Beast on day one and the Brecon Beacons Gap Ride on day two. Rather than lift-served bike park laps, this is natural, big-mountain terrain across Bannau Brycheiniog, so expect proper climbs, long descents and genuinely wild scenery rather than built features.

What makes the Brecon Beacons Gap Ride special?

You start from the village of Talybont-on-Usk and climb steadily up to a col at around 600m, before what genuinely feels like an almost endless descent back down - it's one of those days that stays with you. The ride finishes with proper bike wash facilities in the village, so you're not trying to hose mud off in a car park before heading home.

What safety equipment and support is provided?

Both guides carry first aid kits and emergency shelters, and the terrain and weather get properly assessed every evening so the next day's route can be adjusted if conditions on the tops turn. Scottish and Welsh mountain weather can both change fast, and up around Waun Fach that matters more than most places, so a flexible, guide-led approach is built into how we run the weekend.

What should I pack beyond the bike itself?

A 15-20 litre hydration pack, mini pump, spare tubes and a basic repair kit are essential, along with a multi-tool, spare brake pads, a gear hanger and a chain link in case of mechanicals out on the hill. For clothing, bring a helmet, a full waterproof jacket, an insulated or emergency layer, and MTB shoes you can comfortably walk in if a hike-a-bike section catches you out - knee and elbow pads, wicking base layers and gloves are all worth having too.

What's the Black Mountains Beast Loop actually cover?

It's our classic big mountain day out, around 35km with roughly 1000m of ascent, taking in some of the wildest ground in the Black Mountains before a proper descent to finish, either straight back to the lodge or down into Crickhowell. There's post-ride coffee, wine, beer and cake waiting for you afterwards, which after a day like that is thoroughly earned.

What's the highest point we'll ride near over the weekend?

Waun Fach, at 811 metres, is the highest peak in the Black Mountains and sits right at the heart of the terrain we're riding across the weekend. It's a genuinely wild, exposed plateau up there, which is exactly why we take stamina and weather seriously when briefing the group each evening.

What's the weather actually like up there?

Genuinely anything - we've seen hot sunny days, wet and windy days, and on occasion full-on blizzards, sometimes within the same weekend. That's exactly why we brief the group every evening on what's forecast and adjust the following day's plan if the tops don't look safe or sensible to ride.

Where do we actually stay?

You're based in a traditional Welsh lodge in the Usk Valley, in twin rooms as standard, with mountain bike specific facilities on site so you're not dragging muddy kit through a normal hotel. A single supplement of £100 is available if you'd rather not share.
